Minister's office warns public of fake Facebook extortionist

The office of Minister Lulu Xingwana is aware of a fake Facebook profile created by an impersonator trying to extort money from the public.

As the Minister of Women, Children, and People with Disabilities, Xingwana's department has stated that the culprits are requesting donations from the public for what they claim are various charitable causes.

"We therefore want to put it on record that Minister Xingwana does not have and has never had a Facebook page," the department said in a statement

"We are bringing this matter to the attention of the public to urge them to be careful and not to give in to demands of people who pose as Minister Xingwana electronically or otherwise, solicit assistance in kind or in monetary funds, or disclose valuable personal bank account details to these Facebook personalities.

"We also urge members of the public to report these incidents to the police in cases where they come across such scams."
